About

I'm KE8OIR, a licensed amateur radio operator in Middletown, Ohio.

This site

This is a personal site, not a club's. I keep it as a friendly guide to local ham radio events and nets in and around Middletown, Monroe, Franklin, Carlisle, Trenton, Germantown, Hamilton, Springboro, special event stations, and an introduction for anyone curious about the hobby. It's one person's list, so it won't be complete. Corrections and additions are welcome.

Me and the hobby

I passed my Technician exam in May of 2020, after participating in my first online NWS Weather Spotter Training course. Ham Radio was mentioned as a valuable service to weather spotting during the course, and I was reminded of childhood friend and fellow Boy Scouts in Jr High who were Hams.

In January of 2021, I passed my General exam, and for a few years was in and out of the hobby. Since late 2024, however, I have placed a personal emphasis on consistent hobby activity, and began functioning as the primary net control operator for the DIAL Radio Club Weekly VHF/UHF net.

In 2025 and 2026 I volunteered in support of the Flying Pig Marathon in Cincinnati, OH, and intend to continue doing so for the foreseeable future.

What I operate

I am on VHF/UHF and HF weekly. I spend a lot of time on FT8 and Winlink these days, and tinker with DMR. I like to try to check into local area nets when I travel for work or pleasure, and had a great time checking into Boston Area Radio Club's Monday Night Net on 145.230 (W1BOS) when I was in Boston for Red Hat Summit in May, 2025. I operated from a hotel room window with a 5W HT and had to orient it 90 degrees for my signal to get to the repeater.

I'm on Winlink at least once a week sending/receiving. Send me a message and I'll respond ASAP!

I have quite the collection of HTs, including my two favorites: a Yaesu FT-70, and an AnyTone AT-878 UVII Plus
